QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2022 Japanese universities lead Asia for graduate employability

London, 23rd September 2021: QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, have today released their annual deep dive into the relationship between university choice and graduate employment outcomes. The result is the 2022 QS Graduate Employability Rankings: an independent list of the world's top institutions for career-focused students. The results see seven of Japan's universities rank among the global top-100 - more than any other Asian nation. QS's dataset sees Japanese higher education particularly excelling in its ability to provide students with on-campus access to prospective employers.

Japan's top university for the career-focused student is The University of Tokyo, which places 25th (down two places since the previous edition). This performance sees it rank 5th in Asia: the continental leader is China's Tsinghua University (6th).

Also ranked in the worldwide top 100 from Japan are:

    • Waseda University (37th, down three places)
    • Kyoto University (52nd, up one place)
    • Keio University (56th, down six places)
    • Tokyo Institute of Technology (67th, down two places)
    • Osaka University (76th, down three places)
    • Nagoya University (92nd , up six places).

In total, 22 Japanese universities feature among the 550 ranked institutions. Of those 22:

    • 3 have improved their position since the previous edition of the rankings.
    • 8 have declined in rank.
    • 10 have remained stable within their rank or band.
    • Sophia University (501+ category) is Japan's only new entrant.

Japan: Additional Insights

    • The University of Tokyo achieves Japan's best score in QS's Employer Reputation indicator - 99.5/100 - which is based on over 75,000 survey responses from employers across the world. This is the ninth-highest score in this metric.
    • The University of Tokyo also achieves Japan's top score in the Alumni Outcomes metric, which assesses the number of university alumni that have achieved leadership positions or prestigious status in their careers. It scores 97.7/100, a score bettered by only 17 universities worldwide.
    • The University of Tokyo has more employer partnerships than any other Japanese university, scoring 91/100 in QS's Partnerships with Employers indicator.
    • Tokai University brings more employers onto campus to meet students than any other Japanese institution. It achieves a nation-leading score of 99.2/100 in the Employer-Student Connections metric.
    • Japan's top location-adjusted Graduate Employment Rate score is achieved by Tokyo Institute of Science (99.9/100, seventh-best globally). However, it is the only Japanese university to rank among the world's top 50 when universities are ranked based on their adjusted Graduate Employment Rate.

Ben Sowter, Director of Research at QS, said: "With students becoming increasingly conscious of the competitiveness of the global graduate jobs market, and of the ever-increasing financial costs of their educational investment, it has become correspondingly crucial that independent data of this sort is available to them, so as to inform evidence-based decisions about their educational futures."

Sowter continued: "When it comes to the work that Japanese universities are doing to nurture employability, we see that they are global leaders when it comes to ensuring a high employer presence on campus, setting an example for the rest of the world. Seventeen of Japan's twenty-two ranked universities rank among the world's top 100 for our Employer-Student Connections metric, indicating that they have recognized the immense value that students derive from being able to engage with potential employers on campus."
